Our Story
From Grassroots to Growth
KOWED's story is one of resilience, community, and unwavering commitment to empowering women. What began as informal gatherings of refugee women has grown into a recognized nonprofit transforming lives across Uganda.

The Beginning
KOWED was founded by a group of refugee women in Kampala who recognized the urgent need for organized support for women fleeing conflict. Starting with informal savings groups and peer mentorship, the organization was born from grassroots activism.

First Programs
Launched our first formal programs in vocational training and microenterprise development. Partnered with local NGOs to deliver literacy classes and health education to over 500 women in Kampala.

Expanding Reach
Extended operations to Nakivale and Rhino Camp refugee settlements. Introduced agricultural training and food security programs, supporting farming families with seeds, tools, and climate-smart techniques.

Resilience Through Crisis
During the COVID-19 pandemic, KOWED pivoted to deliver remote support, distributed emergency food and hygiene supplies, and launched digital skills training to help women adapt to the new normal.

Strategic Growth
Developed a five-year strategic plan with ambitious targets for scaling impact. Secured multi-year funding from international donors and expanded the team to include specialized program managers.

A Decade of Impact
Celebrated 10 years of empowering women and transforming communities. Reached over 12,000 women and youth through comprehensive programs in education, livelihoods, health, and advocacy.
